*Cineaste Magazine: Bastards of Utopia

As children, they lived through the collapse of Yugoslavia. But now, amid
the aftershocks of socialism’s failure, they fight in their own way for a
new leftism. Whether clashing with police or squatting in an old factory,
these activists risk everything to live their politics. In the middle of it
all, an American who came to observe the movement finds himself
participating and even goes to jail with them. As the setbacks mount, will
they all give up the fight?

The film, shot during years of fieldwork with a Croatian anarchist
collective, applies EnMasseFilm‘ <http://www.enmassefilms.org/>s unique
blend of observation, direct participation and critical reflection to this
misunderstood political movement. Its portrayal of activism is both
empathetic and unflinching—an engaged, elegant meditation on the struggle to
re-imagine leftist politics and the power of a country’s youth.

Filmed in a purely observational style, with no narration or commentary,
UMBRELLA shows the workaday life of young employees in a factory in
Zhongshan, Guangdong Province, where they engage in monotonous, endlessly
and rapidly repeated routines to manufacture umbrellas, for which they are
paid a meager piece rate. At a massive shopping mall, the “World’s Largest
Small Commodity Market,” in Yiwu, Zhejiang Province, those multicolored,
multipatterned umbrellas are sold at much higher prices by wholesale
merchants, who are among China’s nouveaux riche.

UMBRELLA makes sadly apparent the old adage about “the rich becoming richer
and the poor becoming poorer,” with China’s peasant farmers, who are
struggling to survive amidst the combined forces of globalization and the
new Chinese economy, bearing the brunt of the country’s growing pains.

*Brett and Melanie: The Erotic Documentary with Tony Comstock

Tony Comstock present for a panel discussion following the screening.
Moderated with Colin Weatherby.

 A sneak preview of the seventh in Tony Comstock’s ongoing *Real People,
Real Live, Real Sex* documentary series, *Brett and Melanie: Boi Meets Girl* is
an exploration of sexual pleasure in committed relationships and the
problematic place of explicit sexuality in cinema. ”Brett and Melanie”
depicts a butch/femme couple, and opens up questions about strength and
vulnerability in the context of how we portray and interpret gender.
Throughout Brett and Melanie’s interview, there is a constant dance of who
is strong for whom, of who is vulnerable and who nurtures; and this dance
continues when Brett and Melanie make love.

By including frank footage of Brett and Melanie’s lovemaking along with
their candid testimony, the film also opens up questions about the meaning
of reality in the context of documentary filmmaking, and explodes
preconceptions about the place of sexuality and eroticism in cinema.

*Global Perspectives in Digital Media: A Panel
*Sunday, October 24 at 7:30pm. $9 suggested donation
Producers present for a panel discussion.

Digital technology and emerging platforms have opened up new ways of
reflecting life around the world.  We will share some content and begin a
discussion with producers of five projects that have taken advantage of new
technologies and novel production methods to bring global stories to North
American and European audiences. What are the agendas in bringing these
stories home? How do producers negotiate these cross-cultural exchanges?
What strategies are used to engage audiences with distant lives and
experiences?

This evening will feature a panel conversation with video clips from Video
Nation (BBC 2), WSJ.com, Global Lives, Breakthrough, and Metropolis (Arte),
with producers in attendance for a panel discussion.  Please find complete
information on each participant below. Video Nation was a ground-breaking
access television and participatory media project started which started in
1994.  Mandy Rose was a co-founder and producer.
