Yes, but: saying that Peggy Ahwesh's films is a gem, or that one of David
Gatten's films was booed, doesn't really tell us anything about either
film.  Which isn't to say I expect Su to write a report on her Facebook
status bar, only that her comment doesn't seem to illuminate much about what
was shown last weekend in NY.  Only that she has problems with the
programming.

I can't say I've been lucky enough to attend any festival showing group
programs of short experimental films that weren't a combination of strong
and weaker work, and such a mixture seems inevitable since programming is a
subjective, creative act.  But a conversation about how and why we find one
piece more successful than the other is interesting (while, for me, a boo is
just distracting).

For those not on FB or able to view that thread, Irina Leimbacher recently
commented that what is needed, within and beyond Views, is more discourse,
such as a conversation at screenings themselves; I think there was regret
across the board at Views this year (for those organizing the weekend as
well as those attending) that with so many filmmakers present from so many
parts of the country (and the globe), there was so little time to talk
between programs-let alone in a public forum following the screenings.

As you note, Views programming seems to be sensitive to feedback and has
worked to address the concern about the inclusion of films by women, and
the number of "new" makers screened has increased over the last few years as
well (I believe there were as many as 30 artists screening there this year
who hadn't before).  I imagine we may see a different format next year when
it comes to finding ways to open up the conversation between the films and
the audience during the festival.
