One thing that occurs to me is that despite the fact that the camera has sound capabilities, I don’t know of any way to project the film with sound, unless there’s some clever double projection system out there - or there are still sound-striping services hidden away somewhere. Otherwise this seems like S8 as another interim format for digital, which is where we are today.

Yes, it's a new camera, and that's good.  But I don't see how it helps your
point about the lack of competent repair techs.  When it breaks, as it will
because mechanical things break, who will fix it?  With the new camera we
will continue to have the same issue that existed with the old camera.
