Mads,
Not sure about other of his filmss, but BBC could sell you the rights for Elephant - I checked this recently. They aren't cheap though...

Alan Clarke is essential, but the rights to (at least some of) his work seems to be scattered with the winds. I wanted to include CHRISTINE (1987) in another programme but can't, because of that. Peter Watkins LA COMMUNE is exceptional, by all means a great work.

Thanks for all the great suggestions so far.

Mads

I would suggest Elephant by Alan Clarke - screened on BBC at the time of the troubles, it's a brutally reduced study of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland, with all narratives stripped away. You can't imagine such things being commissioned on British TV these days! Other films of AC's are also worth a look.

Hello everybody.
I am working on a series on avantgarde / "auteur" television for a documentary film festival in November:
The idea is to present programmes made for television (i.e. "inside the system") by creative/critical minds in various genres within the broad category of "non-fiction". Some key names would be Adam Curtis, Godard/Miéville, Ian Breakwell, Glenn O' Brien, Jaime Davidovich, Robert Gardner, et al.
Any further suggestions are greatly appreciated - especially international programmes from beyond the US / UK, as restricted archival access and language barriers makes international research difficult.
Thank you.
Mads
