Hi Jeff
I'm a fan of that show, and thought that scene was great. Mad Men
executive producer Scott Hornbacher is the son of media artist Sara
Hornbacher. Sara was a graduate student at SUNY Buffalo's Center for
Media Study from 1975-78, studying with filmmaking with Sharits,
Frampton and Conrad--and also video with the Vasulkas. Although I'm
pretty sure he was raised in Minnesota, Scott would have been exposed
to the experimental media world through his mother. So maybe instead
of commissioning something new, the producer raided his family
archive. I'd love to think of that scene as using "Mom's experimental
films"!
