24th IMAGES FESTIVAL Awards Announced!

The 2011 Jury included Hafiz, an artist, curator and Director of OK Video Festival in Jakarta Indonesia, Kristina Lee Podesva, artist, writer and Editor of the Vancouver-based art journal Filip.  And Chi-Hui Yang, film programmer, lecturer and writer now based in New York after 12 years as Director and Programmer of the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival.  

AWARDS
Images Prize
Sponsored by Atom Egoyan, this is the grand prize of the festival, awarded in recognition of the Best Canadian Media Artwork in the festival. 
Luo Li (Hamilton, Ontario) for his feature film "Rivers And My Father" which screened at Images Opening Night Gala on Thursday March 31.
 
Deluxe Cinematic Vision Award
This prize is sponsored by Deluxe and honours excellence and innovation in the visual realization of a work by a Canadian film or video artist.
James MacSwain (Halifax) for his short film "Fountain of Youth"
 
On Screen Award
Presented and sponsored by the Images Festival, this award honours the strongest new international film or video in the festival.
TIE BETWEEN
Duncan Campbell (UK) for his video "Make It New John"
Miranda Pennell (UK) for her video "Why Colonel Bunny Was Killed"
Honourable Mention to Mati Diop (France/Senegal) for her short video "Atlantiques"
 
OCADU Off Screen Award
Sponsored by the Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCADU), this award honours the strongest new Canadian or international installation or new media work in the festival. 
Icaro Zorbar (Colombia) for his project "Assisted Installations"
 
Steam Whistle Homebrew Award
Presented by Steam Whistle Brewing, this award honours excellence and promise in a local artist. 
Peter Dudar (Toronto) for his video "Starlings (at nightfall)"
 
Overkill Award
This award was established by the Images Festival in 2000 to honour former Executive Director Deirdre Logue, (1996 through 1999 festivals) and is presented annually to a film, video or installation artist whose work approaches extremes of incorrigibility through form and/or content and challenges our notions of edgy, experimental practice. 
Jesse McLean (Chicago) for her video "Magic for Beginners"
 
Marian McMahon Award
Sponsored by Akimbo with film stock support from Kodak Canada, this award is given to a woman filmmaker each year to honour strong work in autobiography, the complexity of "subject" and the spirit of Marian McMahon. The recipient is invited to attend the Independent Imaging filmmaking retreat, held every each June in Mount Forest, Ontario facilitated by Philip Hoffman.

York University Award for Best Student Film
Meelah Moaphi (York University) for his film "Arrythmia"
 
Vtape Award for Best Student Video
Brad Tinmouth (York University), for his video "Video Sculptures"
 
Tom Berner Award                                                        
This award, sponsored by LIFT, (The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto) commemorates the late Tom Berner, who for many years supported and nurtured Canadian filmmakers. The award is presented annually to an individual who has provided extraordinary support to the cause of independent filmmaking in Toronto:  The 2011 Tom Berner Award goes to Philip Hoffman.

2011 JURY AWARDS
Our jury felt so strongly about two programs and individuals that they added two awards to recognize these contributions to the 24th Images Festival:

Curatorial Vision Award                                                    
This award is presented to Jean-Marie Teno (Cameroon/France) for his stunning curation of Reframing Africa, two programs of historical and contemporary African films from across the continent. 

Award for Cinematic Commitment
This award is presented to John Gianvito (Boston) for his extraordinary documentary on the US imperialism and environmental degradation in the Philippines, Vapor Trail (Clark).
