The Godard reference gets into the broader subject of diegetic rupture, of which material rupture is one mode. Note that the machine gun editing in Vivre Sa Vie doesn't violate the diegesis very much, if at all, because the film's overall aesthetic is reflexivity. Cinematic self-reference was the subject of the New Wave.
