Dear Matt Helme, and everybody,

I agree with many of the points people have made in this discussion, including
some about the benefits of online distribution. But I don't believe cultivating
an internet audience necessitates ten individual, repetitive plugs for your work
in an otherwise stimulating discussion. It is valid to search for ways to
distinguish oneself among millions of videos, especially if one believes YouTube
(and the like) to be cinema's final destination. However, luring interested
viewers relies on good will as well as quality work, and often a single,
attractive, well placed announcement will do. You already mentioned that your
show is free. Perhaps you are engaging in ironic-conceptual list-serve
performance art as commentary on the subject at hand.

On a related note, I'd like to point out that the number of views on internet
videos is often deceptive. I believe the upgraded Vimeo accounts have a feature
where you can see how many people load your video and how many people actually
watch it. It's a lot harder to leave a theater than click on a more interesting
link. I'm not trying to downplay the importance of making work available (should
the artist choose to) to the widest possible range of people. I like being able
to easily access experimental work, and I like that my friends and family and
maybe strangers can see my movies without having to travel, but I'm glad I don't
have one of those Vimeo accounts, because that feature would depress me.
