[Frameworks] withoutabox

The past 8 months I have entered more a dozen film festivals. My work The Soul
of Things was shown through my own efforts and not WAB at:

SF Film Festival
Onion City Film Festival
Exis Film Festival
Toronto Film Festival
Views from the Avant Garde
Cinema by the Bay
Viennale Film Festival

rejected by two

Through WAB I entered more than 10 other festivals and rejected by all but one.
They include:

Ann Arbor
Black Maria
Mill Valley
just to name a few

Accepted by one
Big Muddy Film Festival

rejected by 8

This is a big difference, many fests will only accept films from WAB, unless
privately invited by Directors and or programmers outside of the entry process.
And there are quite a few of those too.

DA

PS Sorry my name is always capitalized, I do not know how to change it.

Has anyone gotten work into a larger (and I hate to use that word) festival
using withoutabox? So far, it sounds like it works well for many festivals
(though the positive comments mostly came from the programmers). The curator
comments are great, but I think it's important to hear from the submitters. I'm
asking all this because I'm really curious to hear other filmmakers' experience
with withoutabox for all types of festivals.

Cannes and Berlinale have fees, but these are exceptions in Europe. The lack of
fees are also the reason why European film festivals rarely join withoutabox or
similar organizations, they just would get more entries (and Oberhausen got
nearly 5.500 last year). If you charge the filmmakers you get less entries which
means you have more time for each work and you might be even able to write
polite rejection letters - as Cannes and Berlinale do. So the fees have pros and
cons. Both as filmmaker and as festival curator I prefer the version without
fees.
