SANDRA GIBSON + LUIS RECODER: SCREENING AND DISCUSSION

PROJECTING PROJECTION (Part II)

This special off-site event brings to New Orleans the multiple-
projector performance work of Sandra Gibson and Luis Recoder. The
duo’s collaborative screening will be hosted by Zeitgeist Multi-
disciplinary Arts Center, a 24 year-old local institution that remains
one of the premiere alternative arts centers in the South. In keeping
with their aesthetic, which is playfully abstract yet materially
specific, Gibson and Recoder’s performance will explore a distinctly
filmic interplay of light and shadow. As one enthusiast has noted,
Gibson and Recoder make live work for those who “love cinema – film
emulsion and its delicacy; projectors and their clackety noise; even
the idea of cinema and its 24 still frames magically transformed into
motion” (Holly Willis, kcet.org). Building complex processes out of
seemingly elemental components, the filmmakers ask viewers to
experience not only the nuances of projected light, but also what they
call “the soft and fragile emulsion of time.” (Federico Windhausen)

The performance at Zeitgeist expands upon their presentation at the
Society For Cinema and Media Studies 2011 Conference here in New
Orleans, “Projecting Projection (Part I)” on Thursday’s panel
“Projection, Performance, Experimental Film: Recent Developments,” and
their appearance has been made possible by generous funding assistance
from the Experimental Film and Media Scholarly Interest Group and the
SCMS 2011 program committee.

Sandra Gibson + Luis Recoder are internationally acclaimed artists
whose work primarily addresses the medium and idea of the cinema.
Their installations and performances unfold the rich paradoxes of
projected light that shuttle between materiality and immateriality,
presence and absence, the visible and the invisible. Gibson and
Recoder have exhibited at museums and festivals such as the Whitney
Museum of American Art (NY), The Kitchen (NY), Redcat (CA), Sundance
Film Festival (UT), Institute of Contemporary Art (London), TATE
Modern (London), International Film Festival Rotterdam (The
Netherlands). Gibson and Recoder live and work in NYC. $10 / $9. / $8
