³The Coming of Age Show²
Screens at Oddball Films

Event: ³The Coming of Age Show: Young Love², a selection of films spanning
four decades curated by Neil Van Gorder that explore the development of
love and relationships for tweens and teens. Films will include: The Game
(1967) An aggressive jaded teenage boy bets with his friends that he can
score any girl he wants. Mod teens and beach party scenes make this a
fast-paced, hip swingin¹ short ; Dear Diary (1981) A thirteen year old girl
has her first period and struggles with her new feelings; The Last Prom
(1981) The classic teen tragedy film. Kids go drinking, driving and dying;
Skater Dater (1965) A group of barefoot boys skate through a Southern
California town as their leader discovers the opposite sex. The surf
rock-esque soundtrack was composed by Mike Curb and Nick Venet with Davie
Allan and the Arrows playing "Skaterdater Rock"; The Innocent Party (1959) A
guilt-tripped noir-like shocker about a ³dirty² girl and a hidden secret-VD!
Watch what happens when she ³gifts¹ her boyfriend with it! Produced by the
Kansas State Of Mental Health; Double Talk (1975) Overlapping soundtracks
transmit the real thoughts of a boy and the parents of his date when he
arrives at their house in this awkward, live-action satirical sketch.

³Breakin¹ The Law!²
Screens at Oddball Films

Event: ³Breakin¹ the Law!² Guest Curator Soumyaa Kapil Behrens and Oddball
Films present an evening of work focused on the darker side of the human
condition. A consummate theme in cinema, the murkier parts of humanity
often delight, shock and manifest in filmic ways. It includes a gritty look
at the American urban landscape with ³The Police Tapes² (1977), a Peabody
Award winning film by husband and wife team, Alan and Susan Raymond, which
unabashedly follows cops in the Bronx for three months in 1976. The program
also shows an excerpt from ABC news expose, ³Sex For Sale: The Urban
Battleground² (1977), hosted by Howard K. Smith. It tells a woeful and
spectacled tale of illicit business and its effect on the American city.
There will be original feature trailers from major motion pictures that
horrify, entice and walk the line between right and wrong, good and evil,
including several Charlie Chaplin films like, ³The Great Dictator²(1940),
along with ³Last Picture Show²(1971), ³Aliens²(1986) and ³Slaughterhouse
V²(1972) among others. Punishment and trickery will also be mused at
through myths and fairytales including a stop-motion rendition of ³Rapunzel²
and a live action version of Aesop¹s ³Three Fox Fables² (1948). Fun, weird,
and educational shorts-- ³What¹s wrong with Vandalism² (1986), ³Ashes of
Doom² (1970), and ³Intro to Dissection²(1972) round out a night filled with
exploration into the more caliginous side of things. Date: Saturday, May 28,
2011 at 8:00PM
