Our programming team has also been expanded. In addition to myself and Alla Kovgan we have teamed up with two new area programmers and filmmakers Mariya Nikiforova and Stefan Grabowski. Mariya and Stefan have been programming amazing screenings for the past two years all over Boston, JP and Cambridge and we are lucky to have them join our team.

So come to BALAGAN and if you are not in the area please tell you Boston area friends and filmmakers to come out to the Brattle this Tuesday and every other one to see exciting work and meet with the filmmakers.

BALAGAN HISTORY

The Balagan Film Series was founded in 2000 by Boston area filmmakers Jeff Silva and Alla Kovgan at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Massachusetts. Its mission has always been to promote films and filmmakers whose works do not fit easily into traditional genres and consequently struggle to receive widespread distribution in spite of their worthiness. Cinema historians often label these “misfit” films as either avant-garde, art-house, or experimental, but even still the films and filmmakers always seem to resist those labels. The films we program are usually made for very personal reasons and their visions and creations are not compromised by the conforming constraints of "mainstream media". Thus for lack of a better word, we are forced to call these misfit films that we program in our series “Balaganian” films. These are films that that move us deeply, to think, to feel, to argue, to laugh, to scream...

That said, these “Balaganian” filmmakers create their works to be screened, exhibited and experienced by an audience. Balagan aims to create a meeting place where an inquisitive audience member can experience the visions of the artists first hand in a theatrical setting that the work was meant to be viewed on. Balagan aspires to nurture and develop our rich community of moving-image artists and cinephiles. The Balagan series provides an outlet for us to meet, share and discuss works in depth in order to be active participants in reclaiming these works into our film history and in shaping our cinematic future.

We aim to continue to collaborate with a variety of film/video artists and film organizations in bringing diverse and exciting programming to Boston and to introduce Boston's talented cinema artists to the rest of the globe.
