dear friends of Canyon Cinema Film Cooperative; Board of Directors, Co-op staff
and members, a few shared thoughts if you will.
Canyon (Cinema) was born, as are all of us, in Love. She has flourished for some
60 years as a unique alternative to commercial filmmaking.
I would urge us as community at this moment of transition, to continue in the
founding spirit of simple respect for life and living that is implicit in our
films. We are retiring our friend and collegue, Dominic Angerame as Director,
after 30-some years of dedicated service, and welcoming Denah Johnston to assume
the helm of leadership. Our retiring director should, meanwhile, be given every
practicable kind of support, gratitude, and thoughtful consideration during a
potentially difficult post-employment interval. With his many accrued,
international contacts, accomplishments as director and filmmaker, and knowledge
of the biz it would seem essential that he be retained in the Co-op community in
an advisory role as consultant, or liason. I leave the details, respectfully, to
the consideration of our Board of Directors, suggesting perhaps a friendly
meeting with Mr Angerame.
I hope this letter will be received as reflecting no favoritism. For myself, I
have indicated this week to Director, Denah Johnston an offer by Lux of London
to author a third edition - now in progress - of my DVD Volume I, supplying
copies to Canyon at cost (Volumes II & III might conceivably follow). Further,
given a visible retirement proposal for the welfare of our outgoing director, I
would offer all personal royalties from film rentals and video sales to the
Canyon Cinema coffers for a period of two years.
Best Regards to all! - BB
P.S: Regarding our September 22 Retirement Celebration in San Francisco,
look for further details by email in September.
