 ESSENTIAL CINEMA: ARSENAL
by Alexandr Dovzhenko No English intertitles (English synopsis
  available), 1928-29, 87 minutes, 35mm, b&w, silent One of Dovzhenko's
few completely independent films, from script to screen. ARSENAL is a
civil war epic envisioned in unusual, painterly images: a fallen soldier
  – drunk on the enemy's laughing gas – his frozen body still baring its
teeth long after the battle and his life are over.

 CONRAD SCHNITZLER PROGRAM 1
  PROGRAM 1: FILM/VIDEO (1970-1980) Schnitzler's early films explode with
energy. During this time CON, as he liked to be called, was making
intermedia art – street performances, gallery installations, and
explosive new music – all influenced by free jazz and psychedelic rock.
For these live actions, CON wore black and white make-up, dressed in
white leather, and mounted a megaphone on a black motorcycle helmet. The
films from this period are fast paced, high contrast, hypnotic
explorations of energy with abstract imagery or CON the
magician/performer as subject matter. Jürgen Boettcher RÄUME INSZENIERTE

L.A. FILMFORUM PRESENTS THE REACH OF RESONANCE, DIRECTED BY STEVE ELKINS
Los Angeles Filmforum presents the fabulous debut film of Steve Elkins,
The Reach of Resonance, on July 29. A meditation on the meaning of
music, featuring John Luther Adams, Kronos Quartet, Miya Masaoka, Bob
Ostertag, Jon Rose, the film is a unique exploration of acoustic
possibilities of the world, and the zones where composers merge sound
and politics. Previously screened at the Angel City Jazz Festival to a
standing ovation, "The Reach Of Resonance" was awarded "Best Film Essay"
at Montreal's International Festival Of Films On Art, and the Temps
D'Image Film For Art Award at the Temps D'Image Film Festival in Lisbon,
Portugal "for a film which reflects the importance of arts in human
society in the most original way." Director Steve Elkins will appear in
person! Tickets: $10 general; $6 students/seniors; free for Filmforum
members. Available at Brown Paper tickets:

 ESSENTIAL CINEMA: EARTH
by Alexandr Dovzhenko No English intertitles (English synopsis
  available), 1929-30, 82 minutes, 35mm, b&w, silent (ZEMLYA) A poetic
expression of love for both nature and Ukrainian culture by the man who
was alternatively branded a deserter by Ukrainians and a Ukrainian
nationalist by Russian Soviets. Dovzhenko champions the progression of
life, class struggle, and new attitudes for a town changed by a tractor
  and a fallen hero.

 CONRAD SCHNITZLER PROGRAM 2
PROGRAM 2: FILM/VIDEO (1975-1986) After leaving the art scene to focus
on composing, CON's musical scores take precedence. He is no longer the
subject; the pieces become longer and more focused. CON produced hours
of cinematic meditations using primitive computer graphics, dissolving
shapes and abstract washes of color and light. One can imagine the
reclusive CON sitting back in his chair, observing the transformation of
a blowing curtain into an abstract landscape, as his wild symphony
unfolds. In all his work, the precise tonalities sculpted by his
electronic instruments inform the vision. Erika Lippki DIE SPUR DIE
  KARAWANE (1977, 7 minutes, video) UNTITLED FILM #2 (4 minutes, 8mm,
silent) LUX CONCERT (1979, 29 minutes, video) SCHATTEN III (1982, 3
minutes, 8mm, b&w) LICHTPUNKT UND SCHWARZE ZEICHEN (1978, 24 minutes,

  time: ca. 95 minutes.

SUBLIMINAL FESTIVAL- DAY 1 : SOUND & FILM FIELD RECORDING TRIP
During this field trip, a limited group of participants (15 max) will
spend time with Lawrence English and Paul Clipson while capturing
environmental recordings in the magnificent redwood forests of the East
Bay. This exercise in phonography and film will foster a newfound
appreciation for our natural surroundings and create a platform for
meaningful interaction between artists/participants while exploring the
locality. Participants are encouraged to bring their own portable
recording gear, and various techniques and approaches to effective
capture will be covered. Full day schedule, and workshop plan details
will be communicated in advance via email to participants. Roundtrip
transportation from Liminal Space to Redwood Regional Park
provided.Check the Liminal Space site for tickets.

Oakland: Liminal Space

3-6pm / 8pm, 950 54th Street, Oakland, CA 94608

SUBLIMINAL FESTIVAL- DAY 2: WORKSHOP & PERFORMANCES
3-6pm: Lawrence English and Paul Clipson will give a workshop and
informal lecture about their approaches to the work – both in terms of
studio technique, aesthetics and field trip preparation for familiar or
extreme environments (specifically in regards to Lawrence – the Amazon,
Antarctica, the Outback) as well as other issues relating to the use of
field recordings as a means for documenting, creating and transforming
environments. Both artists encourage conversation and questions from
participants.8pm:Lawrence English , Illuha, & Gregg Kowalsky, and films
by Paul Clipson. A night exploring the breadth of the spectrum of
amplified sound, from the acoustic and environmental, the synthetic and
processed, to the timbres hidden in radio signals and the distortion of
electricity itself. Stylistically as varied in their approaches as the
sound sources and the materials used to sculpt them, international
artists in their own right, over decades of work all three composers
have established themselves as vanguards of their form. Expect an
evening of both extreme dynamics and subtle susurration, of immersion in
nuanced tonalities and the lashing of dissonant cascades.Check the
  Liminal Space site for tickets.

CINDY SHERMAN SELECTS FILM SERIES: SUTURE
In conjunction with SFMOMA's Cindy Sherman retrospective, the artist has
selected a few of the films that have shaped her vision. Reflecting a
wide spectrum of genres and eras, the works shown here highlight the
extraordinary range of her interests and influences. This week's program
features Scott McGehee and David Siegel's 1993 The Host. In this witty
and cerebral murder mystery, Vincent Tower plots to kill his long-lost
but nearly identical half-brother Clay and pass the death off as his
own. Clay survives Vincent's car bomb, but suffers severe amnesia. With
the help of a plastic surgeon named Renee Descartes, Clay sets out to
reconstruct his identity — but as Vincent, the prime suspect in their
father's murder. As Clay's memory begins to return, he must decide which
life he will embody. Cost of tickets are $5 for general admission; free
for SFMOMA members or with museum admission (requires a free ticket,

SOME GIRLS NEVER LEARN - CHICAGO’S OWN: WRITER/DIRECTOR JERZY ROSE IN
 PERSON!
Audience Award Winner – Chicago Underground Film Festival. Co-presented
by Gorilla Tango Theater. Beaming in from another dimension and high on
helium, this psychedelic fantasy values weirdness and charm over a
traditional story, and it's all the better for it. Amelia Earhart
appears as a god to a hapless academic named Wayne, who found her leg
bone at the bottom of the ocean. She enlists him to protect her from his
best friend Dennis, a high school science teacher who moonlights as a
wacko veterinarian, and whom she claims is destined to destroy her. The
cast, lead by Jared Larson and Mike Lopez, warm up the hilariously
futile dialogue, and the radiant cinematography, handmade set design,
and sheer creative fortitude make this trip a truly fun ride. (2011, 80
  min.). Admission: $8

 FREE RADICALS
by Pip Chodorov 2010, 82 minutes, video NEW YORK THEATRICAL PREMIERE
RUN! Distributed by Kino International. This feature-length documentary
provides a vivid, eye-opening, and appropriately personal introduction
to one of the most important, yet perpetually marginalized, realms of
filmmaking: avant-garde cinema. Achieving the near-impossible task of
doing justice in a mere 82 minutes to this incredibly rich, varied, and
expansive domain, FREE RADICALS is as expertly constructed an
introduction to the topic as one could hope for, thanks in large part to
the film's privileging of rare interviews with some of the most
important filmmakers in the avant-garde tradition (including Jonas
Mekas, Peter Kubelka, Stan Brakhage, and Hans Richter), and its
inclusion of several films in their entirety. The film's sincere
admiration for its subject is best reflected by Chodorov's own
description: "I wanted to share a few of the films I love and introduce
you to some of the free, radical artists who made them." "Named after
the experimental film classic by Len Lye, FREE RADICALS is an
informative yet above all passionate film essay, as well as a fine
introduction to the world of avant-garde film. … Using a range of
different film formats along the way, Chodorov sketches out the
genealogy of avant-garde filmmaking in a playful, yet ultimately very
accessible documentary that aims to transmit this legacy to a new
  audience." –ROTTERDAM INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

KEN JACOB'S THE NERVOUS MAGIC LANTERN: A BENEFIT FOR MILLENNIUM
A benefit performance of TIME SQUARED by Ken and Flo Jacobs will be held
at Anthology Film Archives. This event is to help raise money for
Millennium Film Workshop. "A lightweight propeller steadily turns,
interrupting a single beam of light passing through a lens and making
The Nervous Magic Lantern nervous. Things placed in the path of light
result in an illusion onscreen of things moving in every possible
direction and yet never moving at all, except by the hand of the
projectionist. My home-made cine-projector is down to the bone. A
lightweight frame supports a styrofoam roof and walls. The small
enclosure contains a small theater-lamp and empty space. One might hear
a whisper-fan whispering. Silent cinema was never this silent. This is
hands-on projection with projectionist as main moving part. Objects are
manipulated within this essence of a machine while, onscreen, we see a
vast 3D churning and morphing that could have been made to happen before
the invention of film and film-transport devices. And perhaps they were,
but minds were not ready for the results." TIME SQUARED will be preceded
by a screening of THE GREEN WAVE. $10.00 minimum (larger donations very
much appreciated) all proceeds go to Millennium Film Workshop

8/4
Portland, Oregon: Peripheral Produce
www.peripheralproduce.com
8:00 PM, Hollywood Theatre, 4122 NE Sandy Boulevard

PERIPHERAL PRODUCE AUTO-CINEMATIC VIDEO MIXTAPE RE-RELEASE PARTY
The Peripheral Produce AUTO-CINEMATIC Video Mix Tape, originally
released on VHS tape in 1996 and out of print for many years, featured
early work from local experimental filmmakers Miranda July, Vanessa
Renwick, Jon Raymond, Matt McCormick and many others. Now re-mastered on
DVD, Peripheral Produce is happy to announce the re-release of that
title along with a screening event/release party at Portland's Hollywood
Theatre that will feature classic films from the DVD alongside a
selection of new local experimental work. From the mid 90s to the late
00s, Peripheral Produce was the corner stone of Portland's experimental
film community. Started by Matt McCormick in 1996, Peripheral Produce
was a screening series, a video distribution label, and the force behind
the PDX Film Festival. Local artists such as Miranda July, Vanessa
Renwick, and Jon Raymond cut their teeth at Peripheral Produce while
Portland audiences were treated to unique cinematic events that ranged
from film-projector-performances to "communal View-Master experiences."
The August 4th show will feature many of those seminal works, along with
a selection of new works from Portland's fast rising "next generation"
of experimental filmmakers. Artists featured in the show include Miranda
July, Vanessa Renwick, Jon Raymond, Stephen Slappe, Matt McCormick,
Orland Nutt, Ashby Lee Collinson, and much much more.
