Yes, it's difficult. I'm a major tinkerer, and I wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole.

As the listing says, this guy has been doing these conversions and selling them on eBay for many years. His price ($500) is the max you should consider paying. Like most things eBay, with patience you should be able to find one for less. I've seen them for under $300 -- used ones made as telecine models from the factory, or second hand versions of this sort of conversion. The $500 seems fair for a fresh refurb that includes an overhaul of the claw, and presumably a good set of belts, etc. If you find something cheaper, it'll be in that pig-in-a-poke eBay category, where it will probably work OK, but you're still taking a bit of a chance in an attempt to stay within budget.
