[Frameworks] double 8mm camera

Hey folks
emailing for a friend of mine who recently acquired a bell & howell double 8mm camera

looks like the spring is broken or disengaged - the handle you use to wind it up (crank?) turns with no resistence - any tips on opening it up to see what's going on?

he also has a couple of rolls which may or may not have been exposed - is there a way to tell (without sending it to a lab)? 

had thought of checking the perfs/wind but of course there are perfs on both sides

any leads for labs / where to get film?
