FILM IN THE HOUSE OF THE WORD, vol. v
Featuring Nathaniel Mackey + Christopher Harris
Hull Avenue Studios - Durham, NC
Saturday March 23 @ 8:00pm

A heavyweight convergence of words and images. Acclaimed poet
and National Book Award winner Nathaniel Mackey and celebrated
experimental filmmaker Christopher Harris will team up for the March
installment of Film In The House Of The Word. The event will take
place on Saturday March 23rd at 8:00pm at Hull Avenue Studios
(1515 Hull Ave. Durham, NC) on Duke University's central campus.
The event is free and open to the public with abundant free parking.
FILM IN THE HOUSE OF THE WORD is a monthly celebration of
experimental poetry and film, pairing up local artists with other
regional
and national figures. It is curated by Duke students Laura Jaramillo
(PhD Literature) and Joel Wanek (MFA Experimental + Documentary Arts).
NATHANIEL MACKEY has written numerous books of poetry
including Nod House (New Directions, 2011); Splay Anthem (2006), which
won the 2006 National Book Award in Poetry; Whatsaid Serif (1998);
Eroding
Witness (1985), which was selected for the National Poetry Series. He
is
also the author of an ongoing prose work, From A Broken Bottle Traces
of
Perfume Still Emanate, of which four volumes have been published: Bass
Cathedral (New Directions, 2008), Atet A. D. (2001), Djbot Baghostus's
Run (1993), and Bedouin Hornbook (1986).
Mackey has received numerous awards including a Whiting Writer’s Award
and a 2010 Guggenheim fellowship. He is the Reynolds Price Professor of
English at Duke University and served as a Chancellor of the Academy of
American Poets from 2001 to 2007. Mackey currently lives in Durham,
North Carolina.
CHRISTOPHER HARRIS' award-winning experimental films include a long
take look at a post-industrial urban landscape, an optically printed
and
hand-processed film about black outlaws, a pinhole film about the
cosmic
consequences of the sun’s collapse, a macro lens close up of a child’s
nightlight and a double projection film about a theme park performance
of
Christ’s Passion. His work has screened at festivals, museums and
cinematheques
throughout North America and Europe including the International Film
Festival
Rotterdam (2005, 2008, 2010), the VIENNALE-Vienna International Film
Festival,
the Edinburgh International Film Festival, the Leeds International Film
Festival,
the San Francisco Cinematheque and Rencontres Internationales Paris
among
others.
His most recent film 28.IV.81 (Descending Figures) was named one of
"The Best
of 2011 in Avant-Garde Film" by IndieWIRE and his films are the subject
of the
Cinema Scope magazine article “Between Two Eyes: Four Emergent
Avant-Garde
Film/Videomakers for the New Decade.” He is currently an Associate
Professor
in the School of Visual Arts and Design at the University of Central
Florida in Orlando.
