Conversations chaired by Film Curator GARETH EVANS

The work of all artists in this programme speaks of a practice that evolves parallel to the conditio humana, sharing with philosophy the paradox that while living beings set out to think about their own condition, at the same time, they stay deeply immersed in their very nature and in the quotidian.

HASENHERZ (Hare’s Heart), the screening series initiated by the Austrian artist duo Anderwald + Grond in 2012,

appropriates the modes of presentation devised by Arnold Schoenberg for his ‘Society for Private Musical Performances’

– a film is shown, then discussed with the public and the artist, and afterwards viewed a second time. www.hasenherz.at

Tickets are still available!

Ruth Anderwald + Leonhard Grond are an Austrian artist duo working with experimental films, photography and art in public spaces. They curate a monthly screening and discussion series
for film and video art called HASENHERZ. In 2007 they published Notizen zu einer Küste, their series of photographs combined with the first anthology of contemporary Hebrew lyric poetry translated to German. A brand-new book on their film work, Hasn’t it been a great journey so far? is published at Spector Books Leipzig for the occasion of this screening.

Werner von Mutzenbecher works as a painter, writer, and filmmaker. He has been a key per-sonality of the Basel art scene since the 1960ies. From 1987 till 2000 he was Head of the Painting Department at Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst in Basel where he founded an influential workshop for artists’ film, directed by André Lehmann.

Hannes Schüpbach is a visual artist, curator and writer. Since 1999 he has completed ten silent films. However, his earlier artistic practice with elements of the cinematographic dates back to 1990, with spatial installations and serial paintings that can be experienced through movement. From 1989–1991 he was a student of Werner von Mutzenbecher.

The most important thing that has to be attempted is, on the one hand, to maintain the conversation–if nothing else,
about art–and on the other hand, not to allow such an experiment to end in chatter.
HASENHERZ has understood this–may the exercise succeed! Franz Schuh
