The work of Egyptian artist Basim Magdy uses film, painting, slide projection and installation. To him super8 is not a nostalgic medium. In his examinations of war, information systems, scientific theories and the visual vocabulary of mass media marked by paradox and shifts between demolition and renewal, ruins and reconstruction his humor shines through. As if in his "Six Memos for the Next Millennium" Italo Calvino had forgotten to add humor.

Basim Magdy's recent shows include A Steady Progress of Nothingness, Newman Popiashvili Gallery, New York (2013), Confronting the Monster in a Monster Costume, Centre Culturel Suisse, Paris (2013), and On A Better Day than This, Townhouse Gallery of Contemporary Art, Cairo (2008). He has participated in numerous international group exhibitions including the forthcoming 13th Istanbul Biennial (2013), Sharjah Biennial 11 (2013), Future Generation Art Prize, Venice (2013), Homeworks, Askhal Alwan, Beirut (2013), La Triennale, Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2012), Transmediale, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2012), One Day We Will Shine Like the Stars, Kunsthalle Wien (2011) and Rencontres Internationales, Centre Pompidou, Paris (2011). Magdy is a winner of the Abraaj Group Art Prize 2014.

Since January 2012 the artists Ruth Anderwald + Leonhard Grond have been curating a monthly screening and discussion series. This series is inspired by Arnold Schönberg, who created the Society for Private Musical Performances in 1918 in Mödling, Austria. At their meetings, works would be performed, discussed, and then performed again, with the intention of making performances of newly-composed music more comprehensible. Ruth Anderwald + Leonhard Grond use this very method to encourage a more complete understanding of experimental films and videos. If the artists whose work is being shown, are not present, they can be cut into the discussion via skype. http://www.hasenherz.at

I very much admire your structure for the screenings and agree, it always benefits to see short works twice! In two different modes of looking.

The most important thing that has to be attempted is, on the one hand, to maintain the conversation–if nothing else,
about art–and on the other hand, not to allow such an experiment to end in chatter.
HASENHERZ has understood this–may the exercise succeed! Franz Schuh
