The Amherst College Department of English invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in film and media critical studies and history, with expertise in one of the following possible areas:  documentary film/media, international silent film, critical race studies, avant-garde film and video, or media cultures.  The successful candidate will offer courses in the foundational studies of film from a historical and/or critical perspective, as well as courses in her or his areas of research.

Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and nationality, among other areas.  Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s students consists of Pell Grant recipients, and many more are first-generation students; nearly half of our students are non-immigrant minorities.  We seek candidates who are capable of demonstrating competence and sensitivity in working in a college in which students are broadly diverse with regard to gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion and/or candidates who have a record of teaching a diverse student population.

The faculty member will teach two courses each semester.  Annual responsibilities include first-year writing-attentive courses, specialized advanced seminars, open-enrollment courses in film and media studies, and thesis advising in both English and the program of Film and Media Studies.  Strong commitments to scholarship and to undergraduate teaching are essential.

A Ph.D. is required for this position.

Candidates should submit a letter of application, a CV, one writing sample not to exceed thirty pages, three confidential letters of recommendation, and two to five sample syllabi, including at least one introductory course.
