LA FLORIDA: PERSONAL HISTORIES OF THE SUNSHINE STATE
Like the waves that continuously etch out the shape of Florida, the
personal histories of its inhabitants etch out its identity. Since Juan
Ponce de Leon stepped into its marsh in 1513 Florida has been a concept
up for grabs. The documentary films in this program tell stories of
people who by choice, force or coercion have made a claim to the idea
and place the Spanish called La Florida. Award winning films by Georg
Koszulinski (in person), Lisa Danker and Carl Knickerbocker begin at
8pm. Q&A following the films. Come early for Robbins Barstow Florida

  THE COTABATO SESSIONS
"The Cotabato Sessions is a full length music album and 30 minute short
music film that features the music legacy of one family, the
Kalanduyans, in Cotabato City, Mindanao, Philippines. It was a rare
moment to be able to get together these generations of musicians in the
family. The Kalanduyans are part of a minority Islamic tribe, the
Maguindanaons in the Philippines who have been entirely relocated to
Cotabato City and elsewhere after many decades of civil unrest in the
south. This album and film capture the generations of men, women, and
youth performing ritual music and its variations in the home of master
artist Danongan Kalanduyan, in a procession, in the courtyard of a
mosque and in the recording session of a concert hall." Susie Ibarra, a
composer, performer and professor in music and advancement in public
action at Bennington College and a TED 2014 Senior Fellow.

CANYON CINEMA SALON WITH DOUG WENDT
Join us Monday, June 30th at New Nothing Cinema for an evening with
filmmaker and visual artist, Doug Wendt. Wendt, once coined "one of the
most original and zany minds in underground film", will be presenting
some old favorites along with several previously unseen and unreleased
works. Given Mr. Wendt's comedic finesse, this event is certainly not to
be missed! This event is FREE! - Doug Wendt: "I hesitated listing my
new/unseen films in the standardized way since I've discovered in my own
life and in teaching film history and media analysis that expectations
often color works that deserve a completely fresh first viewing. The
element of surprise is a reliable way to truly sense wonder. I succumbed
to form to provide some orientation and official introduction. True
cinema cannot be expressed in words. Its language must be seen. Its
frame is not a Proscenium Arch. Often the best story is no story at
all." - Tonight's 16mm Dancing Shadows via Doug Wendt - Some Erts (1995)
8 min color silent, Film Version (1985) 2 1/2 min color silent speed,
Leashed (2001) 2 min color silent speed, Dub Film (1980) 3 min color

HEARKENINGS PRESENTS EDGAR G. ULMER'S THE LIGHT AHEAD
"Audaciously adapted from the writings of 19th century Yiddish novelist
Mendele Mokhir Sforim, The Light Ahead is the greatest of Edgar G.
Ulmer's shtetl films. Here, the director counterpoints the pastoral
Green Fields [1937] to criticize the poverty and superstition that
oppress a pair of star-crossed lovers. Made on the eve of World War II,
The Light Ahead is at once romantic, expressionist, and painfully
conscious of the danger about to engulf European Jews." — National
Center for Jewish Film (Dir. Edgar G. Ulmer, 1939, 94min). Preceded by
two D.W. Griffith shorts: A Child of the Ghetto and Romance of a Jewess.

8 pm, 1200 N. Alvarado St.

THE FORGETTING OF OBJECTS AND TIDES
The Forgetting of Objects is a portrayal of the in-between time and
space at the filmmaker Daphne Rosenthal's set. Tiny touches, discoveries
through the lens and the natural sounds of the room. It's a play between
the filmmaker as a performer and the lives the materials desire to have.
Rosenthal will also screen her short Him and Heran animation that sheds
light on the isolation of both man and woman in a scene from The Man Who
Knew Too Much (Alfred Hitchcock, 1956). Bertha Aguilar's Tides is a
documentary exploring a hidden geography of Los Angeles through the
sites in which three foreign and politically committed artists, Sergei
Eisenstein, David Alfaro Siqueiros and Carlos Bulosan, worked and lived
during the the decade of the 30's. FILMMAKERS IN ATTENDANCE!
