SPACE MATERIAL / IMMATERIAL PLACE: JEREMY MOSS IN PERSON
Filmmaker Jeremy Moss, whose work has screened around the globe from the Crossroads Film Festival in San Francisco to the Arkipel International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival in Indonesia, brings to Austin a 60-minute program of recent moving image work. In the summer of 2011, Moss began expanding beyond his narrative training to fully explore expressionistic structural tendencies and its application to place and the moving body, creating the Super8 surrealist documentary THOSE INESCAPABLE SLIVERS OF CELLULOID, the abstract hand-made 16mm films produced at the Independent Imaging Retreat, THE SIGHT and CICATRIX, the dance for camera pieces in collaboration with choreographer Pamela Vail, (UN)TETHERED, CHROMA, and THAT DIZZYING CREST, and the essay film in collaboration with writer Erik Anderson, THE BLUE RECORD. As a program, these works cohesively embody an immersive optical and sonic experience reveling in cinema’s capacity for both meditative expression and the
rigors of formal experimentation.

A SERIES OF MYSTERIES: THE 52ND ANN ARBOR FILM FESTIVAL TRAVELING TOUR, DIGITAL PROGRAM A
Filmforum dives into its 40th anniversary year with our second show of the week, highlights of contemporary works from around the world. The Ann Arbor Film Festival Traveling Tour gives Los Angeles audiences a chance to see the best new experimental films and digital works. Program A features nine films including Mystery, the short narrative by Spanish filmmaker (and AAFF favorite) Chema García Ibarra; Cut, the most recent film by German artists Matthias Muller and Christoph Girardet; Michael Robinson’s The Dark, Krystle, which brilliantly repurposes the 80s television program Dynasty; Broken Tongue, Mónica Savirón’s animated collaboration with poet Tracie Morris; Kevin Jerome Everson’s Fe26, a portrait of two men scrapping copper in Cleveland (52 AAFF Jury Award); Gowanus Canal, Sarah Christman’s beautifully abstracted depiction of one of the most contaminated urban waterways in the United States (52 AAFF Gil Omenn Art & Science Award); Mountain in Shadow, Lois Patiño’s
sublime film of skiers set in immense mountainous landscapes; the ecstatic, recursive animation Division by Dutch artist Johan Rijpma (52 AAFF Barbara Aronofsky Latham Award for Emerging Experimental Video Artist); and 52 AAFF audience favorite Suchy Pion (Dry Standpipe) by Polish artist Wojciech Bąkowski, a collage of home videos condensed into blocks of abstraction with a wry, melancholy confessional narration. SHAPESHIFTERS CINEMA PRESENTS KEITH AND GEOFF EVANS
Keith Evans is an activist who has been working and performing in the Bay Area for 25 years. His artworks are translation systems, fascination devices, extra-cinematic experiences that reveal the phenomenon and the idea of cinema as an ecology and system, one that is unfixed and accreting, neither nostalgic nor utopian. Collaborator Geoff Evans is an Oaklander who has been involved in many musical projects for 25 years. "the mantle degassed our water" is another in a series of Evans' para-naturalist cinema systems--an arrangement of near-working and functioning pieces of electronic equipment and formats including super-8, video arrays, record players, 3/4" tape md cassettes casio and guitar as well as objects found in field research used to explore the para-cinamatic. Together they are a device and a hazard of set-ups that embraces the mechanical, mercurial and unique perceptual relationships between these things; their relationships in space as well as on the screen. "the
mantle degassed our water" is evocative of the elemental transformative forces at work inside the earth. This electromagnetic device becomes a para-cinematic journey to the underworld where, locked within rare and highly compressed mineral arrangements, is more water than resides on the surface. Stratigraphies and veils flatten and blur into highlights. Spectral screens carry the images, glaciers score a path of stained glass. Process gives way to image and process again. The sound and space integrate the vision while the key component of curiosity illuminates this fascination device.

NEW YORK THEATRICAL PREMIERE RUN! While the rest of America sleeps, DIY filmmaker/musician Giuseppe Andrews (a one-time teen actor in INDEPENDENCE DAY and DETROIT ROCK CITY) has made over 30 experimental features with titles like DOILY'S SUMMER OF FREAK OCCURRENCES, TRAILER TOWN, and UTOPIA BLUES, set in some demented alternate universe (i.e. Ventura, California) populated by real-life alcoholics and drug addicts, trash-talking senior citizens and trailer park residents dressed in cow outfits and costume-shop wigs, acting out booze-fueled vignettes of severe psychosis filtered through Giuseppe's John Waters-meets-Harmony Korine-meets-Werner Herzog sensibility. With GIUSEPPE MAKES A MOVIE, Adam Rifkin has created a wildly surreal, outrageously funny, and strangely touching portrait of a truly Outsider Artist, as he follows Giuseppe and his seriously impaired troupe on the production of his latest 2-day opus, GARBANZO GAS, starring Vietnam Ron as a cow given a weekend reprieve
from the slaughterhouse at the local motel. Beyond the sun-stroked Theater of the Absurd madness of Giuseppe's vision, there is a remarkable and endearing sense of family among the director, his amiably bonkers dad Ed, patient girlfriend Mary, Sir Bigfoot George, and the rest of his surreal Trailer Park rep company. As skate-punk Spit sagely observes about Giuseppe's movies: "They're just like, nothing really makes any sense, and I don't know, that's kinda how reality is, and nobody really cares to accept that."

PROVIDENCE & FRIENDS AT UNIONDOCS
Magic Lantern presents Providence & Friends, a broad sampling of recent New England film, video & multimedia performance. This past summer, Magic Lantern put out a call for its first submission-based program. They were interested in seeing contemporary work by local artists in the vicinity of Providence, Boston, and New Haven, and in bringing this work to the attention of others in a timely celebration of regional filmmaking. All of the artists featured in Providence & Friends are, or were until very recently, based in the area. Providence & Friends ranges from small, unpretentious 8mm love letters to the most advanced digital manipulations, from beautiful abstractions to politicized travelogues, and from the finished form of recorded media to the contingencies of live performance. Its scope is as big as Providence is small. Featuring works by Sarah Abu Abdallah, Alexander Dupuis, Dave Fischer, Tara & Gordon Nelson, Mariya Nikiforova, Adrian Randall, Deirde Sargent, Asha

For generations of Slavic peoples, this fear manifested itself in the form of the mythical witch Baba Yaga -
to roam too near her hut perched on chicken legs was to risk being roasted for her dinner. In spite of this culturally ingrained dread, the turbulance of war, famine, and destruction that stain the pages of Eastern European history led to the witch's figurative vanquishing. Refugees fled to her woods for shelter, nourishment and sanctuary, and in so doing, reshaped an entire culture's perception of nature. This transition was slow and unconcious, and is best told through the stories of the region - the memories of those who experienced periods of warfare first-hand as well as the recollections that have passed generation to generation. To bring these stories to life, we have merged countless accounts into a single, unified narrative - an animated fairy tale that gathers history, folklore, and memory into one. This fairy tale is intertwined with an anthropological exploration of modern day, post-conflict Eastern Europe. Combining these elements, The Vanquishing is about more
than a single moment in history. It is about the accumulation of history, the accumulation of repetitive action, the retelling of stories retold, the retention of belief, and the unconscious osmosis of ideas. It is a study of collective memory and the sociology of fear, imagination and survival.
