APR. 30: NIK NERBURN RETROSPECTIVE
Erstwhile OC miracle-worker, the now at-large Mr. Nerburn bounces back into our Mission District safe-house for a feature-length review of his “punk-documentarian” practice. In the Shadow of Paul Bunyan criss-crosses the outsized myth of the jolly logger with the hidden history of the US-Dakota Indian War, told from the perspective of a native Minnesotan. Today I Am Going to Kill Myself but First I Am Going to Dance is Nik’s other Midwestern historiography, in this case about an immense insane asylum in Fergus Falls, where he excavated the ghosts in the graveyard and the local community that keeps their memory alive. MANIUM is an abstract exploration of the folk knowledge surrounding the black houses of Olympia, Washington, while Officer-Involved Shooting surveys the landscapes where Trayvon Martin, Walter Scott, and Jordan Davis died at the hands of white policemen. $6.

CHICK STRAND, SEÑORA CON FLORES
Chick Strand (1931-2009) was a trailblazing free spirit and West Coast filmmaking pioneer who lyrically combined elements of documentary, ethnographic and experimental techniques to create a distinctly unique body of work. Strand played a vital role in the 1960s Bay Area filmmaking community both through her work and her involvement in the cofounding of Canyon Cinema—which would become the San Francisco Cinematheque—with friend Bruce Baillie in 1961. Strand also taught film for twenty-five years at Occidental College in Los Angeles, influencing a generation of filmmakers. Meanwhile, she made frequent summer trips to Mexico, where she shot many of her films over a thirty-year career. The Harvard Film Archive is proud to present a near complete retrospective of Chick Strand’s groundbreaking filmography, which includes her first film—made with her son Eric Strand, Eric and the Monsters—to her masterpiece Soft Fiction, and up through to her last film (edited posthumously) Señora
con flores / Woman with Flowers. Underappreciated by critics and at times overshadowed by various male contemporary filmmakers, Strand’s work is now enjoying renewed interest and critical appreciation, due in no small part to recent film restorations by both the Academy and Pacific Film Archives. VIDEO OPERAS
Building on the pioneering work of composer Robert Ashley, who believed that the America of his time was a culture of TV, Experiments in Opera presents a collection of five original operas created specifically for the screen. These works, commissioned from a wide range of composers/artists, were conceived of as a unique way to tell compelling stories through music in a format that is most relevant to our multi-screen culture. The videos, ranging from 10-20 minutes, will be screened as one continuous program. The commissioned artists are Jason Cady, Emily Manzo, Anna Mikhailova, Aaron Siegel, and Dorian Wallace/David Kulma. These artists come from diverse musical backgrounds, bringing to their video operas experiences with chamber and electronic music, improvisation, indie rock, and various approaches to vocal production. Their works demonstrate a wide range of storytelling interests, encompassing time-travel, hallucinogenic therapy, personal histories, and contemporary takes
on monsters of lore. These video operas reveal personal visions of the anxieties of life and triumphs of the imagination in the twenty-first century. CHICK STRAND, SEÑORA CON FLORES
An exquisite culmination of Strand’s filmmaking techniques, Soft Fiction is an innovative collaboration among five women, blending their intimate stories into an intricate personal documentary. Strand’s only film shot with a tripod and her longest completed work, Soft Fiction attempts to depict how memory changes over time and “becomes soft around the edges.” With its open reference to softcore erotic fiction, Soft Fiction recounts the women’s personal stories of sexuality in a direct manner fairly uncommon at the time. Strand’s sensuous, unique and poetic work has been recently restored and is finally receiving the critical acclaim it deserves. Elasticity US 1976, 16mm, color & b/w, 25 min Soft Fiction US 1979, 16mm, black & white, 54 min Soft Fiction was restored in 2015 by the Academy Film Archive, with restoration funding provided by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and The Film Foundation.

UNEXPOSED FILM FESTIVAL
UNXFEST in Durham, North Carolina The UNEXPOSED Film Festival will take off on May 7, 2016 with a day-long event featuring three bands, two film screenings, one 16mm film workshop, food catered by The Pit Authentic BBQ, and beer provided by Bull City Burger and Brewery. Hosted at UNEXPOSED Microcinema in downtown Durham. Brendan and Jeremy Smyth of UNEXPOSED Microcinema have put together what they call the UNX Collective, a team of individuals from around Durham to pre-screen films from an open call for submissions and select two hours worth of short movies to premiere at UNXFEST. The UNX Collective met every Saturday for the past two months to watch, choose, and finalize two film programs that feature 11 official selections from filmmakers around the world. After these movies premiere at UNEXPOSED Microcinema on May 7th, they will then be transferred to a DVD and sent to other microcinemas across the world, libraries, and also to professors around the United States to be
incorporated in their curriculum of experimental film. The Smyth brothers have also done something a bit different with the structure of this particular fest; a traditional film festival will run its course in a weekend, a three day long film extravaganza. They have taken these three days and spread them throughout the year, labeling each installment UNXFEST 1.1 (May 7th), UNXFEST 1.2 (September 17th), and finishing with UNXFEST 1.3 (December 3rd). GATEWOOD: THE TOOTHPASTE IS OUT OF THE TUBE + WEIRD SF +
American photographer Charles Gatewood (in person!) started out in the ‘60s as a young man with dreams of showing the world the radical cultural developments in his country. He met the iconic instigators of change and documented them for posterity. Over time, Gatewood drifted more and more into the personal expression of sexual subcultures, both in the US and abroad, his powerful photos of the tattooing and piercing scenes paving the way for “Modern Primitives”. Carl Abrahamsson’s debut doc is introduced by Gatewood himself, following a passel of excerpts shedding more well-deserved light on this gentle Bernal Heights visionary--clips from his Weird San Francisco, scenes from Mark & Dan Jury’s Dances Sacred and Profane, and highlights from Anthony Buchanan’s recent video visit.
