EARLY MONTHLY SEGMENTS #92 = TWO FILMS BY NINA FONOROFF
EARLY MONTHLY SEGMENTS #92 Two Films by Nina Fonoroff Monday 02 January 2017 Early Monthly Segments is thrilled to kick off the new year with a screening of two films by Nina Fonoroff. The Accursed Mazurka and A Knowledge They Cannot Lose explore the intersection of loss, grief and mental distress with the external world of familiar sounds and images, memories and songs. A Knowledge They Cannot Lose concerns the death of Fonoroff’s father and elegantly combines audio from cassette tapes with images from his journals and appearances on television “to construct, through memory, an impression of how his life influenced mine and the lives of other people” Amy Taubin accurately described Fonoroff as “A collage virtuoso [who] uses the enveloping sound of music from movie melodramas and gothic radio plays plus a third-person, softly spoken voice over to bind wildly diverse images: home movies, off-the-TV detritus layered opticals with colors so delicate they look hand tinted. The
Accursed Mazurka is an excavation of female sexuality that loses its dangerous edge only when it shears off onto a neatly framed chronicle of therapeutic experiences.” Programme: The Accused Mazurka, Nina Fonoroff, USA, 1994 16mm 40 minutes A Knowledge They Cannot Lose, Nina Fonoroff, USA, 1989 Super 8mm 17 minutes @ Gladstone Hotel, Ballroom 8:00 PM screening | $5-10 suggested donation Special thanks to Canyon Cinema www.earlymonthlysegments.org
