SMALL, REAL: OBSERVATION AND THE MUNDANE
Filmmakers Huey Amaru, Cleon Arrey, Sarah Ibrahim, and Shabier Kirchner in person One Day at a Time: Manny Farber and Termite Art is inspired by artist Manny Farber’s call for an art of “both observing and being in the world.” Presented in conjunction with Kahlil Joseph’s film Fly Paper, which is the subject of a companion exhibition at MOCA Pacific Design Center, this program presents experimental film and video works that employ the constituent parts of Joseph’s practice, namely observation, musicality, and a documentary impulse. Works by Sarah Ibrahim, Shabier Kirchner, Cleon Arrey, Micah Ariel Watson, and Huey Amaru acutely capture the material, immaterial, and in between with intimate actualizations of Black life. Fragments and representations of the mundane become transcendent in their devotion to the ordinary and articulation of care. Tickets: $15 general; $10 for seniors; $8 for students with ID; free for Filmforum and MOCA members. Available in advance from Brown Paper Tickets at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3923890 or at the door.

CITY SYMPHONIES: RIEN QUE LES HEURES
by Alberto Cavalcanti. (NOTHING BUT THE HOURS) One of the very first city symphonies, this film interweaves documentary, experimental, and narrative elements that together provide vivid images of Paris in the mid-1920s. The Brazilian-born Cavalcanti was at the time a central figure of the French avant-garde, but his fascinating career would later find him making pioneering documentaries for John Grierson's GPO Film Unit in the UK in the 1930s, dramas, noirs, and musicals for Ealing Studios throughout the 1940s, and finally a wide array of films in Brazil, East Germany, France, and Israel in the years before his death in 1982.

CITY SYMPHONIES: STUDIES OF PARIS
by André Sauvage. (ÉTUDES SUR PARIS) Restored print courtesy of CNC - Direction du patrimoine. "[This film by] writer, painter, photographer, filmmaker, producer, and passionate traveler André Sauvage…starts on the city's outskirts, exploring a landscape gradually getting more industrialized and urbanized before approaching its core. […] An elaborate expository travelogue (with intertitles indicating the various locations), the film constantly shifts to a poetic mode marked by an Impressionist predilection for water and smoke and for shifting fragments - reflections of light, parts of statues, legs of pedestrians, hectic traffic, playing children looking directly into the camera, a stray cat, a noticeably staged encounter between lovers, et cetera. Sauvage's use of tilted angles, reverse motion, fast motion, and superimpositions rarely evokes the kineticism of the metropolis, as in the films by Ruttmann and Vertov; instead, his special effects turn Paris into a place of estrangement and a site of Surreal encounters." -Steven Jacobs, THE CITY SYMPHONY PHENOMENON Preceded by: Joris Ivens RAIN / REGEN (1929, 12 min, 16mm, silent) This model "city poem" observes, as Ivens put it, the changing face of the city (Amsterdam) during the rain. Filmed at a moment's notice over the course of four months - inclement weather permitting - but edited into a single passing shower, the film is Ivens's finest gem of the 1920s.
