Razor blades were used to edit video tape in the early days of video editing for broadcast, especially 2-inch quad and 1-inch tape.
The cut had to be made on a diagonal to avoid a roll bar. Some people (now old-timers) were very good at it. 
Linear editing was made by dubbing from tape to tape which lost a generation. 
CMX was introduced in 1971, the first non-linear editing system, and razor blade cutting was phased out.
