[Frameworks] NYC: The American Experiment Final Showcase

Good Morning Frameworks!

The yearlong experimental film series, THE AMERICAN EXPERIMENT, happening
at Maysles Documentary Center, comes to a close this month with the final
screening from The Futurism Is Ours section and the final showcase at the
end of the month. We hope to see you at one of these screenings and invite
you to stay after for the filmmaker Q&A or roundtable discussion happening
after each program.

Afronauts (Nuotama Bodomo, 2014, 14 min.)  Pain Revisited (Dyani Douze and
Nontsikelelo Mutiti, 2015, 14 min.) Fucked Like a Star (Stefani Saintonge,
2018, 8 min.) Ecstatic Experience (Ja'Tovia Gary, 2015,  6min.)

NNFS is a core collective of black women filmmakers whose priority is to
create community and spaces for support, exhibition and
consciousness-raising. The group is formed by Chanelle Aponte Pearson,
Nuotama Bodomo, Dyani Douze, Ja'Tovia Gary, Stefani Saintonge and Yvonne
Michelle Shirley. *Post-screening discussion with members of the New

Country Ball 1989-2012 (Jacolby Satterwhite, 2012, 12:38) Chronicle from a
Lying Spirit (BY KELLY GABRON) (Cauleen Smith, 1992, 6 min.) Pictures from
Dorothy (Kevin Jerome Everson, 2003, 5:30 min.) Strategies for the
development of/ redefining the purpose served/ Art in the age of... A.K.A.
the Making of the Towering Inferno  (Lawrence Andrews, 1989, 23 min.)

The American Experiment Final Showcase (Feb 27–29, 2020) reflects on and
synthesizes themes we’ve explored over the past year of experimental
programming. The filmmakers featured in the Final Showcase challenge and
expand genre, ethnography-making, imagined futures, and internet-era moving
images. This shorts program showcases the multitudes of and natural
overlaps between cultural production, alternative art spaces, and black
experiences. *Followed by a roundtable discussion*

*The Complete Works of Ed Owens*

Private Imaginings & Narrative Facts (Ed Owens, 1966, 6 min.) Remembrance a
Portrait Study (Ed Owens, 1967, 6 min.) Tomorrows Promise (Ed Owens, 1967,
44 min.) Autre Fois Ji'ai Une Femme (Ed Owens, 1966, 22 min.)

The four masterpiece works created by experimental filmmaker Ed Owens in
1960's Chicago & New York are shown together on one of the first occasions
since their restoration last year. Owens creates delicate dreamscapes using
a mesmerizing combination of light, rhythm and portraiture. * Post-screening
discussion with Melissa Lyde and Ed Halter *
