Sad to hear this news. I had been in email contact with Gene occasionally over the years, and always found him kind, easygoing, and encouraging of my own work. Expanded Cinema was one of the first film books I ever bought, and while I was writing my own book on the subject his was always on my desk. The immediacy and warmth of Gene’s writing, his enthusiasm for all the potential he saw in new media, make the book very special. Some scholars of my generation have taken him to task for that enthusiasm, for lacking critical distance (a criticism that is made with the benefit of hindsight, and one that is perhaps overall cynical). But Gene was writing this in the moment, a bold thing to attempt, and the lack of cynicism in his book was - I think - part of his desire to retain the voices and honor the perspectives of the artists whose work he was writing about. That’s probably the most important thing I took from Expanded Cinema.
Condolences to his family; hopefully there is solace in knowing how many people he inspired with his legendary work.
Best,
JW
