[Frameworks] Histories of Direct Film Animation?

[David Sherman]

I'm looking for resources for the history of direct film abstract animation
in artist made films, specifically 1930's-mid 1950's. I know Len Lye &
Harry Smith - Are there other makers doing film painting at this time? Are
there articles/texts that could be suggested on origins of this type of
work?
