Ah, I just heard that Michael Snow has died. This really hurts. One of the most astonishingly original, inventive, expansive, minutely microscopic, musical, encyclopedic, poetic, theoretic filmmakers of all time. A magnificent improvising pianist, jazz avant-garde and sound artist and theorist, photographer, book maker, public artist, and multi-dimensional hybridizer. His work is an infinite joy to study and teach. I loved watching him at the various congresses for experimental film and watching him meet and enjoy Klaus Wyborny in Berlin. I loved hearing from one of the curators in a Vienna museum about Snow's amazing performance on solo piano at the Musikverein the month before. Seeing him in attendance years ago at the conference on Hollis Framton in Chicago, one wished such a conference for him—never mind, he was celebrated all over and very often, and will reward attention for a long time. What a lovely person.
