[Frameworks] Color separation experiment

Thanks to everyone who replied here! This is all super duper helpful and
gives us a more clearly defined starting point. Going to give it some more
thought as we mull over all the ideas/examples, etc. and I will follow up
with our chosen path.

Any more input/advice is most welcome!
