Despite having suggested a dark room, now that Sean brought it up, I'll
happily concede the idea that a wee bit of ambient light might help with
contrast is at least worth a try.
With the set-up in my pitch-dark basement, I had to set the aperture
manually to avoid blowing out the whites, which then led to lost detail in
the dark areas. That was with an SD 29.97 3-chip camcorder though (Sony
PD100A). The results with the later setup were better, and while that might
have been due in part to the Canon camcorder just having more advanced
chips and electronics, it's also true that the room it was in had enough
light leak that it was never totally dark like the basement. But no, it
never occurred to me that a little wash might reduce the effective contrast
of the projected image, so I never did any kind of comparison. You don't
know what you don't know...
