Thank you Ruth, and thank you Mary for thoughtful responses. I have some suggestions to further this effort along. We need to start making films that will inspire others to take decisive yet peaceful political actions. In terms of the type of filmmaking, I suggest we keep each piece fairly short, no more than five minutes in length. They can fall into genre you can come up with; all sorts of variations of narrative, documentary and/or experimental will all suffice. You can make more than one, if you are moved to do so. These works do not have to be perfect as the situation we are confronting seems to be morphing hourly; they simply need to address issue(s) at hand concisely and passionately (however the approach) as it is necessary to reach as many audiences as possible. These films/videos can originate from any moving image medium however, the final version should end up as digital piece to allow for easy access and presentation. The specs for these pieces can be ascertained later, but the higher the definition the better. If there are any curator/programmers out there reading this, please make some time to organize this effort locally and set aside some time at your theaters for some public showings of this work. An online presence of these group compilations should be researched and engaged as well. The dwindling progressive press may not be able to withstand the onslaught coming from White House and others…they will need our help. At this point I’m not sure if this artist call will gain any traction, however I am available to help directly in any way I can.

In the Abortion Clinic Film Collective series, we hear from medical directors and staff, mothers and daughters, criminal defense attorneys and advocates, about how their personal and professional lives have been affected post-Dobbs. However, here in the USA as you most likely know, we are experiencing an authoritarian oligarchical push to reverse and destroy institutions that indeed help people. Our personal freedoms are now truly compromised so before some of us are truly hurt or imprisoned by this regime’s cruelty I am calling for as many filmmakers that are able to address this current situation in new work and local curator’s present this work and communicate with all of us to bring our community together in actionable response. This can be one of many initiatives but I believe as filmmakers we can start here.
