[Frameworks] film thief, copyright idiot

Read the vimeo article. Turns out they use audible.com to autodetect content. You can register ownership of your content free with audible
https://www.audiblemagic.com/content-registration/ . All the sharing sites use this site. Vimeo on fb automatically take down stuff that's flagged, but youtube unfortunately simply notifies the uploader that they've violated copyright, and if the user doesn't acknowledge this, the video simply stays up. The creator needs to file a dmca to get it taken down. At least though i believe they can't use youtube to monetize on the violation unless they can pass the automatic copyright checking via audible. If your content isn't registered, then the uploader can sail thru that and get paid by youtube to have advertising on the video. It's pretty stringent still, as i've heard of musicians and filmmakers who own the content actually getting flagged. But this audible thing sounds like a good idea. I looked that idiot musician guy up, and he seems like a dude who actually sells records and might be someone who'd try some slimy shit like that. I'd file a dmca notice with youtube right away. You even told him no and he did it anyway. That's fucked. No shame. Especially to just use your whole film in its entirety. I listened to something he did, it sucked. -charles

Basically, there is a sizable part of the video production industry that is aimed towards markets that corporations consider "internal". This ranges from pitch reels for television shows, ad agency presentation pitches, marketing research videos, etc. There is a high premium on "multimedia" across the entire culture of corporate america so its a no brainer that there has been an explosion in the number and quality of these videos being produced. Lots of times these videos are referred to as "rip-o-matics". They are discussed openly as such. These videos are usually a combination of produced video, rounded out with video culled off of vimeo and youtube. DPs cinematography reels are particularly open to being targeted. Short films are also ripe for stealing because there is a consistent "look" across many scenes and there is potentially a lot of character to the establishing shots. The hypocrisy of this activity is mind-boggling. These are the same corporations financing the anti-piracy movement.

This seems to be an implicit acknowledgement from vimeo that this black market exists, and an implicit validation of that market, and a signal that they aren't going to include that market in their broader strategies to eliminate piracy. Which as always is only ever focused on the consumer class.

>> Keep in mind you can, if the work is on a video sharing site, submit a copyright claim....I forget what they're called. It at least works with youtube. Not just corporations can do it...you just submit the complaint, and youtube will either take the video down, or will black out the video and leave the sound intact. -charles

I do not post anything online that I am at all concerned with someone stealing. I am even very paranoid with having password protected films on vimeo but so many festivals these days only want the online submissions. Thanks for the heads up Raymond, it was good of you to share this with the group.

I caution anyone who places work on youtube. However, I can find almost any film (narrative, documentary, etc.) on youtube. I do not look for ag films there.
