[Frameworks] Avant-Garde film and Hollywood special effects in the 1970s & 80s

I have been reading Julie Turnock's "Plastic Reality: Special Effects,
Technology, and the Emergence of 1970s Blockbuster Aesthetics." Among other
things, the author discusses West Coast experimental filmmakers (many of
whom were associated with CalArts) who produced visual effects for
Hollywood movies. Can anyone recommend other researchers who have done work
in this area? I am particularly interested in specific techniques and
instruments that were developed - analog, digital or hybrid. Thank you.
