KEN JACOBSS URBAN PEASANTS, PLUS
This program, featuring the theatrical premieres of MoMAs restored Urban Peasants and recent digital works by Jacobs, acknowledges the legendary avant-garde filmmakers enduring engagement with the folk art of the amateur. Ken Jacobs will join us to introduce a new work, to be announced. Urban Peasants. 1975. USA. Directed by Ken Jacobs. 60 min. Using silent home movies, shot in Brooklyn by his wifes aunt Stella Weiss in the late 1930s, and a Yiddish-language recording, Jacobs fashions a moving meditation that plays on our awareness of the Holocaust accumulating abroad on the eve of the Second World War. Things to Come. 2019. Directed by Ken Jacobs. USA. 35 min. Jacobss hypnotic 3-D adaptation of New York 1911, a long-forgotten Swedish documentary restored by MoMA in 2017, is representative of his current work.

BEAUTIFICATION
We are back for 2020 and excited to be kicking off with a warm welcome to artist Sindhu Thirumalaisamy! She will present two works on the concept of beautification to open up a conversation around when development may be erasure. Beautification projects, typically understood as processes of civic ‘improvement,’ reflect contested social imaginaries around development. Sindhu Thirumalaisamy will introduce her practice through two films that respond to the tacit connections between beautification, enclosure and erasure – Different Colourful Designs and The Lake and The Lake. She will be joined by Lakshmi Padmanabhan to lead a conversation after the program. In 2009 the Bangalore municipality hired sign-painters to produce hundreds of murals in a massive public art commission. Familiar symbols of myths, heroes and nature were chosen to beautify the city. Different Colourful Designs (2016) takes a closer look at these images and the city that etches over them. The Lake and The Lake (2019) dwells in the peripheries of a polluted lake in Bangalore, “India’s Silicon Valley”, where the act of observation is interrupted by flying foam, noxious gases, daydreams, and questions from passers-by. Despite its spectacular toxicity, the lake remains a valuable resource and refuge for counter-publics. Standing alongside fishing communities, migrant waste workers, private security guards, street dogs, and children, it is evident that there is no nature that doesn’t also include all of us. Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, English, and Bangla, are spoken and sung amidst a chorus of non-human sounds. ------------ PROGRAM ------------ Kere mattu Kere (The Lake and The Lake) India/USA, 2019, 38 mins Different Colourful Designs 15 mins., India, 2016

DANNY LYON: WANDERER
LA premieres! Q&A with Danny Lyon by Skype (schedule permitting) Filmforum at MOCA hosts the Los Angeles premieres of two films by renowned photographer and filmmaker Danny Lyon, followed by a conversation with Lyon by Skype. The evening is highlighted by the Los Angeles premieres of two more recent works. Both Nothing and Wanderer draw on spaces, objects, lives, and passings in the American Southwest, where Lyon lives. Nothing opens with a group viewing an annular solar eclipse, where the resulting ring of fire defines a circle in the sky, but shifts to austere observations of things passed and left behind metal fragments, toys, and a grave. Wanderer sees Lyon revisiting members of the Sanchez and Jaramillo families, whom he has filmed and photographed going back to the 1970s. It most notably follows up his feature film Willie, as we learn the fate of Willie, Ferny, and others, of people living in and out of prison and poverty, with violence often lurking. Well precede these with Lyons older film Dear Mark, a portrait of sculptor Mark di Suvero, at a time where his monumental work Declaration on Venice Beach since 2001, will soon be dismantled and relocated unless the city or a patron choose to purchase it. Tickets: : $15 general; $10 for seniors; $8 for students with ID; free for Filmforum and MOCA members. HOT ZEN ISLAND / WORKS BY LIZ RODDA
HOT ZEN ISLAND exists somewhere between spa, Japanese rock garden, and destruction site. The exhibition’s primary material, Hooter’s dust, was collected from the restaurant’s demolition site. The resulting sculptures and video take their cue from wellness centers, Western reimaginings of the East, and Hooters, once prominently located at the gateway to south Austin. HOT ZEN ISLAND is the result of considering a range of questions such as: what larger cultural shifts does the demolition of Hooters signify? Is obsolescence the format of progress? How does the self-care industry fit within a capitalist system? Does the term “Zen Garden,” coined by an American author, speak more to Western ideas than the Japanese gardens it purports to describe? Similarly, has “Zen” been used so broadly as to become almost meaningless? Do we link materials and ideas to mysticism to make them sexier? What mythology have we attached to Hooters and will it be immediately forgotten?

THE COMPUTATIONAL SUBLIME: DIGITAL WIZARDRY OF GREGG BIERMANN
Saturday January 18th 3:00PM Mana Contemporary, Jersey City and The Film-makers' Cooperative are excited to host New Jersey experimental filmmaker and video artist Gregg Biermann, who will present a survey of work he completed over the last decade. Often working with footage from Hollywood classics like The Wizard of Oz (1939), Rear Window (1954), North by Northwest (1959), and others, Biermann's work takes advantage of the possibilities of digital cinema to advance rigorous compositional strategies. From the Artist: My work comes out of the avant-garde tradition of film as visual art. Avant-garde cinema is an important and relatively young artistic project. While it maintains its scrappy integrity, and while many significant works have been created in subsequent decades, current practitioners have not fully moved out of the shadow of the prodigious 1960s and '70s. The development of new tools has often determined aesthetic innovations. Consequently, I've looked to new technologies to discover vast unspoiled frontiers no longer available to small gauge filmmakers interested in exploring cinematic form. Most of these works could not have been achieved in earlier periods and are deeply rooted in digital technology. The meaning of digital technology lies in its ability to copy, alter, mask, fragment, super-impose, mutate, reflect, transmit and reframe.
