BLACK FEMINISM
One of the most overlooked and little known stories of cinema is the documentary and experimental production of pioneering Afro-American filmmakers in the seventies and early eighties. With limited means, in the face of contempt and hostility, these portraits manifest and value their stories, bodies and images. Starting with a Nina Simone song, in Four Women Julie Dash presents Lina Martina Young in a dance film where the form and treatment of light and colour turn figurative stereotypes to oblique, critical angles. Water Ritual is a pioneering film in experimental black feminist cinema. Conceived as a ritual in an abandoned area of Watts, it dialogues with the African Diaspora cosmology and attempts to expel the putrefaction absorbed from the physical environment and to cleanse it. In her portrayal of invisible women, with Killing Time Fronza Woods presents the dilemma of a woman preparing to commit suicide and, with Fannieï¿½s Film, a 65 year old cleaning woman talks about her life, hopes and feelings. ï¿½What inspires me are people who don't sit on lifeï¿½s rump but have the courage, energy, and audacity not only to grab it by the horns, but to steer it as well.ï¿½ (Fronza Woods). Finally, Suzanne, Suzanne is a raw documentary by Camille Billops about her nieceï¿½s fight to comprehend the legacy of her violent, abusive father, her motherï¿½s complicity, and drug addiction as an escape; in the film, after years of silence, she shares these experiences with her mother. JONAS MEKAS: FROM THE DIARIES OF A CINEMA MANIAC
Microscope presents a screening of video works by Jonas Mekas, in honor of and as a tribute to the legendary filmmaker, poet, artist, critic, and founder of Anthology Film Archives, among other institutions, who died a year ago on January 23rd at the age of 96. The night marks the American debut of ï¿½From the diaries of a cinema maniacï¿½, a roughly hour-long video that combines a series of diarist portraits of film luminaries from New York and abroad ï¿½ such as Agnes Varda, Bï¿½la Tarr, Harmony Korine, Peter Hutton, Ken Jacobs, MM Serra, Peter Kubelka, and Susan Sontag ï¿½ with other moments from the life of the filmmaker himself including a recent spontaneous reading of his manifesto ï¿½Cinema is Not 100 Years Old.ï¿½ The work will be preceded by two short videos ï¿½Made in the U.S.A.ï¿½ (2010) and ï¿½When,ï¿½ a 16mm film to video transfer (1968/2005). The former appeared in Microscopeï¿½s inaugural exhibition ï¿½Independenceï¿½ in 2010 and the latter in the exhibition ï¿½Independence Returns,ï¿½ which launched the galleryï¿½s 2011 season. 9:00PM NEWFILMMAKERS FEATURE FILM PRESENTATION. Fred Hatt THREE DANCES OF SUDDEN LOSS (2018, 16 minutes, digital). David Finkelstein SPONTANEOUS ARTIFACTS (2020, 77 minutes, digital). Two actors improvise an extended dialog, examining the way that we record and organize our experiences, and the dangers inherent in creative expression. Their words inspire a series of complex, unfolding landscapes, meticulously rendered in 3D animation, and a multi-layered musical score. Like archeologists of the unconscious, their explorations unearth images from their imaginations, as well as from our shared, cultural legacies, giving rise to vistas filled with clocks, flying pizza pies, pyramids, tarot cards, and myriad other artifacts. By turns ecstatic, reflective, illuminating and elegiac, these visually sumptuous explorations draw the viewer into an inner landscape.
