Constellation Super 8
Helga Fanderl presents a specially selected program drawn from her
vast collection of silent Super-8mm films. A former student of Peter
Kubelka and Robert Breer, she creates her work in an impressionistic
and intuitive manner, responding to the rhythms, forms, textures, and
colors she encounters, always limiting herself to in-camera editing,
so each film becomes a reflection of its own creative process. She is
also known for her unique approach to presenting her work to the
public: projecting her films herself from within the screening space,
Fanderl conceives each screening program as a unique “montage” of
individual works that, together, form an ephemeral “film,” never to be
repeated in itself.

--
Helga Fanderl was born in Ingolstadt, Germany, in 1947. Her desire was
to become a poet. But after her studies of German and Roman languages
and literatures in Munich, Paris, and Frankfurt a.M., she decided to
become a teacher due to the influence of the Frankfurter Schule
(School of Frankfurt). She taught for years before finding out that,
for her, film was the appropriate medium of artistic expression. It
was not language, but visual art that opened the way to a very
personal and intense poetic work. Since 1986, she has created a body
of work consisting of around a thousand short films that she uses for
her screenings and also for exhibitions. She lives in Berlin and
Paris.
